The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides protection for property owners against flood loss while working with communities to develop Floodplain Management programs. Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) identify areas of high risk.
The Engineering Office maintains current FEMA maps and assists residents, contractors, realtors and engineers in determining whether a piece of property lies within a floodplain or not. FEMA maps are also available on-line. The Engineering Office also provides advice and assistance to residents experiencing flooding and drainage problems. Assistance requests can be made by phone, fax, in person (please call 630-377-4486 for an appointment) or by e-mail.
For the purpose of identifying flood zones to determine flood insurance rates, the Flood Insurance Rate Maps prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Kane County are currently used.
For the purpose of regulating property development, the above mentioned FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps are used to determine whether or not a property is subject to special building requirements.
Information on whether your property is in the 100-year floodplain can be obtained by visiting the Public Works Engineering Division at 1405 South 7th Avenue. Maps are available to look at as well as other flood-related information. The City also has Elevation Certificates for new development available dating back to 1992.
