Fire Department Open House

To mark Fire Prevention Week, the St. Charles Fire Department is hosting an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Fire Station No. 1, 112 N. Riverside Ave., in St. Charles. The theme this year is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” The campaign works to educate the public about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

The public is invited to attend the family-friendly Open House event hosted by the St. Charles Fire Department, as part of a series of events in support of this year’s campaign. Stop by the Open House to talk with firefighters and paramedics, and learn about fire safety. The event will feature fire extinguisher demonstrations, special rescue operations, and a live burn to demonstrate how effective sprinklers can be in combating residential house fires. There will be refreshments and activities for children, as well as informational displays about Fire Department programs and general safety concerns.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms reduce the risk of death in a home fire by more than half (54 percent). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

The St. Charles Fire Department encourages all residents to actively support the 2024 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”

“Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely,” said Chad Tinsley, Fire Lieutenant. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is a great way to remind everyone about these messages and to act on them.”

The St. Charles Fire Department offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years. The campaign works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.
