City of St. Charles attends to storm damage, prepares for impending second storm

7/14/24 Storm Damage

The City of St. Charles continues cleanup after a powerful storm struck Kane County on July 14. After the storm, several City departments, including Public Works, the Police Department and Fire Department, responded to storm-related service calls. The Southwest quadrant of St. Charles – the area south of Main Street and west of the Fox River – was hit hardest, and experienced the worst of the city’s storm damage.

“With another powerful storm forecasted for this evening, the City is taking proactive measures to ensure public safety,” City Administrator Heather McGuire said.

Damage included down trees and large branches, several impassable roadways, and isolated power outages from tree branches and debris striking power lines due to high winds.

“Crews are working tirelessly to assess and manage the storm’s damage, prioritizing the restoration of power and clearing roads,” said Public Works Director Peter Suhr, adding that the removal approximately 20 to 30 large trees and branches is anticipated today.

Residents should not remove any branches near or touching powerlines, as they may be active, posing a significant safety risk. Instead, contact the St. Charles Public Works Department for assistance.

Brush collection is underway on the east side of the City, followed by the west side next week.

The Police Department responded to 75 service calls and the Fire Department responded to 15 dispatched calls throughout the evening, which included reports of downed wires and trees, structure damage, traffic signals down, a flooded storm basin, and blocked roadways.

“We are bracing for another storm this evening and have staffed accordingly,” Police Chief Jim Keegan said. “We urge residents and business owners to monitor the weather and take necessary precautions to remain safe.”

The City advises residents to have multiple ways to receive weather updates. Monitor weather reports from the National Weather Service through a mobile weather app, the local news, or an NOAA Weather Radio. For storm preparedness and safety tips, visit www.ready.gov.

In anticipation of severe weather this evening and to ensure everyone's safety, a decision regarding the cancellation and rescheduling of tonight’s City Council meeting will be made by 6 p.m. Visit stcharlesil.gov or the City’s social media platforms for updates.

To report a storm-related incident, contact Public Works at 630.377.4405 or pw@stcharlesil.gov. If the situation is an emergency, call 911.
